Trauma
Relational Psychotherapy and Counselling

Trauma happens in relationship. Whether it is abuse, neglect, or even accidents, the strength of our connections greatly affect our capacity to move forward. Therapy for trauma begins with establishing a strong and reliable trusting relationship, which serves as a container for the memories to be brought forth, and processed by finding new pathways through life.

Relational therapy uses the context of the therapeutic relationship to facilitate the process of recovering from traumatic experiences and patterns, and move towards more embodied and authentic impulses and expressions. The safety of a relationship that is professional, without judgment or expectation, but at the same time heartfelt and humane can allow one’s heart to grieve what was lost and open to what is possible in the present.

Whether it is the wounding of betrayal, grief around the state of the world, or acute trauma related to abuse or accidents, the relationship is the foundation of allowing one’s being to relax and open up to processing the painful emotion. Combining this safety with mindfulness and a somatic-experiential focus, this approach creates an opportunity to find accurate language for the inexpressible and process the feelings that previously felt overwhelming.
